13 year old Henry K. Larsen is writing in his journal about his past experiences in his life. From living in Picton Ontario, to living in Vancouver B.C he has to start fresh with his father. Let’s take it back….
Life was perfectly normal until Henry’s older brother Jesse, took off with their fathers shot gun without the family knowing. Jesse was a troubled teenager who wanted to get back at his bully Scott. He ended up shooting Scott at his school, and later on shot himself. This ruins their family’s reputation in their town, and everyone looked at the Larsen’s differently. This shatters Henry’s family which causes them to move on, and resume their lives in Vancouver, so nobody knows about their past.
Henry still can’t get over the fact that his brother was dead, and missed yet hated him. He was the reason why he had to move schools, lose friends, and Jesse ruined their parents’ relationship. Henry’s mother is in Picton Ontario getting therapy, while Henry and his father are in Vancouver trying to move on without Jesse.
Now that Henry started fresh, he meets new people in his neighborhood and at his school. He becomes friends with different people, but tries his hardest to keep his past to himself. He didn’t people in his “new” life treating him like the way people did in his old town. Throughout the book Henry understands why his brother did what he did, and learned that bullying could really affect one’s life in various ways. He learns this through his friends at school, because Farley (one of his friends) experiences bullying. To get back, Henry learns to stand up for his best friend like he should have done for his brother before it would be too late for his new friend. Because he stood up for Farley, he ended up getting beat up and sent to the hospital. Towards the end, Henry’s parents realize they can’t afford to lose another son, so Henry’s mother goes to Vancouver to work things out with Henry’s father. They all realize that Jesse’s death was no ones fault so in the end they go on a family friend road trip to Seattle to watch the GWF (Global wrestling foundation).
